Paying it forward earns Armentor Crystal Gavel Award

Each year the Louisiana State Bar Association selects an attorney and judge in each region of the state to receive its prestigious Crystal Gavel Award, which recognizes community service and volunteer work. This year the honor was bestowed on Lafayette attorney Glenn Armentor — in large part for his decades of work helping at-risk youths — in a ceremony Friday at the Lafayette Bar Association’s 2607 Johnston St. office. One of 10 children, Armentor grew up poor and paid his way through law school by working offshore. He credits many adult mentors for helping him stay on the right path so that he could earn his law degree, and today devotes much of his time paying it forward. In 2009 he introduced the Glenn Armentor $10,000 “Pay it Forward” Scholarship Program of Excellence, which awards hardworking underprivileged youths with $10,000 scholarships to UL Lafayette.

Since that time, seven worthy students have received one of the $10,000 scholarships, with a goal of increasing the offering to six or eight scholarships per year. “Pay it Forward” is the largest individual scholarship grant program in the history of the university.Armentor was recognized for his lifetime of commitment to helping, supporting and guiding at-risk youths in Acadiana. In the early ’80s, as the Boy’s Club and Girl’s Club of Acadiana struggled to develop roots in the community, he was instrumental in helping the organization secure facilities offering a safe haven for kids to pursue wholesome, healthy activities. Since that time, the club has helped thousands of young boys and girls stay on the right track.

Around the same time, Armentor became a passionate supporter of the Ragin’ Cajun Amateur Boxing Club, where he joined coach Beau Williford in helping redirect troubled young boys, focus their aggression more positively and return to school. When the club’s location burned to the ground in 2003, Armentor took it upon himself to spearhead a fundraising drive that led to a new facility that reinvigorated the program.

American Tactical’s ‘battle’ gear

Launched by Brian Hoffner, a 30-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, the clothing line addresses the needs of the fashion-conscious carrier of concealed handguns, and spotlights a recent rise in the number of people carrying concealed weapons. The New York Times reports such stores as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Cabella’s have seen an increase in demand for “covert fashion.”  The sporting apparel line Under Armour has adding Velcro pockets to items for easy gun access, and smaller businesses like Hoffner’s are opening around the country as the demand for gun permits grows, the Times reports.

Thirty-seven states offer concealed-weapon licenses to qualified gun owners, according to data compiled by ProCon.org. Illinois is the only state prohibiting the carrying of handguns.Hoffner said launched his line two weeks ago at a Texas SWAT conference, after working on the idea for about a year and a half. He wanted to give gun owners a way to carry weapons covertly and have quick access. As a vice officer, Hoffner said he wrapped an ACE bandage around his gun to conceal it on his thigh so prostitutes wouldn’t find it, but that denied him quick access.

“These pants aren’t just for the SWAT guys, they’re for soccer moms and your everyday superheroes — those high-speed operators that suddenly need to defend themselves and their family,” he said. His Texas-manufactured khakis and denim pants cost $150 a pair.”I thought, man, if I only had a zipper, and then a light bulb went off,” Hoffner said.He plans to expand his line to include more colors, casual men’s dress pants and women’s skirts and pants, though some women have already ordered the men’s pants. Eventually, his company will offer to install zippers for the guns in any clothing.

Foreigner tops list of unlawful survey cases

About 40 cases of illegal geographic surveying cases involving foreign individuals or organizations have been investigated since 2006, some of which involved stealing military information that could threaten national security, according to the country’s surveying and mapping administration. The administration over the weekend disclosed the top 10 unlawful surveying cases in 2011, with a case involving a US citizen ranking first. It is the third consecutive list made since cases involving foreigners were included in the top 10 list.

The US citizen, who was not named, used two Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers in August and collected more than 90,000 geographic coordinates near a military base in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region without permission from related departments, the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation (NASMG) said in a statement on its website. The person, who registered with a travel agency to offer outdoor tour services to foreigners in Xinjiang, was fined 20,000 yuan ($3,170) in January, and all of his surveying equipment and results were confiscated by the Xinjiang surveying and mapping bureau.

“This kind of illegal survey results combined with satellite positioning data could seriously jeopardize national security, and in some situations, they could even be used for precise missile positioning,” Li Daguang, a military expert at the PLA National Defense University, told the Global Times yesterday.Li said the coordinates, topography and geographic information of key areas are considered top secret, and if acquired by other countries, could be used to attack wartime targets. There were similar cases involving foreigners in the past two years.

Teen girls with cancer get free dresses for A Prom To Remember

But her body is fighting a battle. The vagaries of cancer have left her thin. Very thin.Ana Vasquez wears a double zero size dress and she is worried that she and her boyfriend Sy Oliva have driven all the way from Homestead to the Zola Keller boutique on Las Olas Boulevard for nothing. After a disappointing look at two racks of dresses, Ana nervously bites her nails. Oliva places a comforting hand on the small of her back and rubs her bare arms to keep her warm. It doesn’t look good.

But Ana Ventos, who is coordinating the fittings, isn’t about to let her leave without a gown. She rushes to her nearby home and comes back with white gown with a flounced hemline and a black sash. Her stepdaughter wore it once.”It fits me perfect,” Vasquez said, preening in front of the mirror in the fitting room.”For the four or five hours that this prom is, they’re no longer sick.” said local fashion designer Zola Keller. “They are like everybody else – 16 and 17 year-olds that go to their prom.”Keller’s eponymous boutique on Las Olas Boulevard is providing the teenager girls with what is often their first formal dress or gown to wear to A Prom To Remember.

This is the third year for prom where over 200 teenagers who are battling cancer get to walk the red carpet, dance, have their photos taken and meet local celebs. But this it the first year where several young ladies are getting their prom fashion for free.”The prom dress is one of the main highlights for the girls,” said Brandon Opre, a local financial adviser who founded A Prom To Remember in 2009 and staged the first one in 2010. “When we first started, we had people donate old prom dresses. It was a real hassle to sort them, clean them, store them, press them and then get them to the girls in a tri-county area. But my high school years and my high school prom meant so much to me and these kids are not getting this.”

A guy who no longer knows how to get things done

I have some concerns. Not major concerns. I have those, too. But everyday concerns, most of them related to the fact that I no longer seem to be hip.For example, I am concerned about the Viagra commercial I see when I’m watching sports on TV. “This is the age of knowing how to get things done,” it says. It shows a guy driving what appears to be a vintage Pontiac GTO down a highway in the desert. The engine starts to overheat. The guy who knows how to get things done pulls into a raggedy-looking garage/gas station, which just happens to have a vending machine that sells liter-size bottles of water.

He buys one, takes a slurp and pours the rest of it into his radiator. He happily drives away, headed (we are led to believe) for a romantic rendezvous where his knowledge of how to get things done will involve the deployment of Viagra. It’s not hip to obsess about Viagra commercials. But the guy who knows how to get things done is a dope. There’s no way he’s going to make that rendezvous, not after he blows the head gasket or cracks the block on his GTO by pouring cold water into the radiator. Why buy water when you can get it from the garage’s hose? The water from the hose not only would be free, but it also would be warm and, thus, safer for the car. Plus, the guy who knows how to get things done ought to be using a mixture of water and coolant.

I’m concerned for the wife of the guy who knows how to get things done. Based on his performance at the gas station, if he ever gets home, she’s going to be disappointed. Why am I so concerned? Because for a long time, I defined the word hip. For example, I was drinking a lot of water long before drinking a lot of water became cool. Now I learn that’s not enough. In my office is a cooler that holds five-gallon bottles of water. But it’s not just water. No, the label says it’s “the hydration drink.”That’s because today’s yutes don’t drink water. They “hydrate.”

Inspired by Cops, Clothing Line Hides Handguns

Woolrich calls itself the “original outdoor clothing company,” and they are also one of the few companies to make clothing that will work as well on stakeouts as on camping trips. The company’s Woolrich Elite Series Tactical line features clothing with plenty of pockets and zippers to hold not only fishing lures, but handguns and handcuffs. The clothing line was started in 2005, but redesigned with features to conceal weapons and other law enforcement tools like guns, handcuffs and plastic restraints, in 2010.  The company took on the challenge of creating the specialized apparel after law enforcement contacted the company seeking more clothing options for undercover work and stakeouts.

To explain just how the clothing works, merchandising manager Brian Miller modeled the clothing in a series of videos. In the video, Miller shows how the pockets in the “Discrete Carry Twill Jacket” can hide a 6-inch barrel handgun, in addition to a hidden pocket behind the neck for things like plastic restraints.Rather than calling attention to what’s tucked away in the clothing, Miller says the apparel items were designed to appear “100 percent non-tactical.”Carpet beetle larvae are small, about a quarter inch long and carrot-shaped with long hairs. They will feed on anything organic. The adult beetles are small, round and usually black, sometimes with lighter markings.

The best method for controlling carpet beetles is by completely cleaning everything. Steam-clean the carpets if possible as well as any upholstered furniture. Make sure you vacuum under all furniture as carpet beetles can survive by feeding on dust bunnies. Keep a bottle of Greenbug for Indoors available to directly spray any adults or larvae you find. Make sure you vacuum up all the dead insects as the spines of the carpet beetle larvae can cause rashes if they penetrate your pores.

J.Lo dishes up the dresses for local proms

A Charleston Gazette story on a local effort to find donated dresses to send area students to proms they might otherwise be unable to afford to attend led to a dress avalanche — plus the donation of five dresses by singer and “American Idol” host Jennifer Lopez.”The total dresses that came in after the story were 113, plus 76 pairs of shoes and there were 40 handbags,” said Kerri Hill of Dream Makers, a nonprofit group she created with Tina Osborne. After the March 28 story, Hill’s husband, Anthony, got to work on Twitter, tweeting the article link to various celebrities’ accounts, including Lopez and the actress and talk show host Kelly Ripa.

They heard back from both of them — or at least both of their “people” who handle their affairs — and both said that donated prom dresses would be forthcoming, said Hill said. They haven’t yet received anything from Ripa. But UPS recently delivered to Hill’s Putnam County home five flashy, rippling prom dresses from Lopez. Hill said it was unclear whether the dresses were Lopez’s own or were purchased for donation — the eggplant-colored, light green, dark blue and shiny black dresses certainly look like they could fit her.”Three of them had tags and two didn’t,” she said.

One of the dresses (not shown in the photo above) will be worn by a special needs student headed to Nitro High School’s May 12 prom as a result of Dream Makers. “I wanted to make the prom extra special for her,” Hill said.Hill had some help on that from within her family. As the Nitro student wears her Lopez-donated dress to prom, her companion will be Hill’s 15-year-old son, Tristan Chapman, who offered to be her date.In the midst of a maelstrom of donated prom dress, shoes and purses at Hill’s house, sit the remaining four dresses from Lopez. “I’m thinking maybe an auction to raise money.”
